Tormentors and Oppressors

They Made Your Back Like Dirt for Them to Trample On

Let Them All Be Put to Shame and Driven Backward

Psalms 129:1 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth, may Israel now say:
2 Many a time have they afflicted me from my youth: yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back: they made long their furrows.
4 The LORD is righteous: he hath cut asunder the cords of the wicked.
5 Let them all be confounded and turned back that hate Zion. (KJV)

Psalms 129:1 They have greatly oppressed me from my youth — let Israel say —
2 they have greatly oppressed me from my youth, but they have not gained the victory over me.
3 Plowmen have plowed my back and made their furrows long.
4 But the LORD is righteous; he has cut me free from the cords of the wicked.
5 May all who hate Zion be turned back in shame. (NIV)

Psalms 129:1 They have treated me badly all my life. (Let Israel repeat this.)
2 They have treated me badly all my life, but they have not defeated me.
3 Like farmers plowing, they plowed over my back, making long wounds.
4 But the LORD does what is right; he has set me free from those wicked people.
5 Let those who hate Jerusalem be turned back in shame. (NCV™)

Psalms 129:1 Israel, tell us how your enemies have persecuted you ever since you were young.
2 "Ever since I was young, my enemies have persecuted me cruelly, but they have not overcome me.
3 They cut deep wounds in my back and made it like a ploughed field.
4 But the LORD, the righteous one, has freed me from slavery."
5 May everyone who hates Zion be defeated and driven back. (GNT)

Psalms 129:1 Many a time and much have they afflicted me from my youth up— let Israel now say—
2 Many a time and much have they afflicted me from my youth up, yet they have not prevailed against me.
3 The plowers plowed upon my back; they made long furrows.
4 The Lord is [uncompromisingly] righteous; He has cut asunder the thick cords by which the wicked [enslaved us].
5 Let them all be put to shame and turned [GNT: driven] backward who hate Zion. (AMP)

Isaiah 51:21 Therefore hear now this, thou afflicted, and drunken, but not with wine:
22 Thus saith thy Lord the LORD, and thy God that pleadeth the cause of his people, Behold, I have taken out of thine hand the cup of trembling, even the dregs of the cup of my fury; thou shalt no more drink it again:
23 But I will put it into the hand of them that afflict thee; which have said to thy soul, Bow down, that we may go over: and thou hast laid thy body as the ground, and as the street, to them that went over. (KJV)

Isaiah 51:21 Therefore hear this, you afflicted one, made drunk, but not with wine.
22 This is what your Sovereign LORD says, your God, who defends his people: "See, I have taken out of your hand the cup that made you stagger; from that cup, the goblet of my wrath, you will never drink again.
23 I will put it into the hands of your tormentors, who said to you, 'Fall prostrate that we may walk over you.' And you made your back like the ground, like a street to be walked over." (NIV)

Isaiah 51:21 So listen to me, poor Jerusalem, you who are drunk but not from wine.
22 Your God will defend his people. This is what the LORD your God says: "The punishment I gave you is like a cup of wine. You drank it and could not walk straight. But I am taking that cup of my anger away from you, and you will never be punished by my anger again.
23 I will now give that cup of punishment to those who gave you pain, who told you, 'Bow down so we can walk over you.' They made your back like dirt for them to walk [Moffatt: trample] on; you were like a street for them to travel on." (NCV™)

Isaiah 51:21 You suffering people of Jerusalem, you that stagger as though you were drunk,
22 the LORD your God defends you and says, "I am taking away the cup that I gave you in my anger. You will no longer have to drink the wine that makes you stagger.
23 I will give it to those who oppressed you, to those who made you lie down in the streets and trampled on you as if you were dirt." (GNT)

Isaiah 51:21 Therefore, now hear this, you who are afflicted, and [who are] drunk, but not with wine [but thrown down by the wrath of God].
22 Thus says your Lord, the Lord, and your God, Who pleads the cause of His people: Behold, I have taken from your hand the cup of staggering and intoxication; the cup of My wrath you shall drink no more.
23 And I will put it into the hands of your tormentors and oppressors, those who said to you, Bow down, that we may ride or tread over you; and you have made your back like the ground and like the street for them to pass over. (AMP)
